Most of the population is now becoming more aware and interested in environmental issues, saving trees and if you are considering a new deck, plastic decking material should be considered. Plastic decking is a great choice because it uses what was once considered waste and now can be something you can enjoy for years.

Materials: Most of the plastic decking available today is made from recycled plastic. What was once a plastic milk jug or shampoo bottle may now be ready to be your new deck. Some other types are made from recycled material and others from recycled plastic and minerals. Still other materials are plastic and wood composites. The decking material is solid and not hollow, with a wood grain, with the look and feel of real wood.

Characteristics: Maintenance is one of the big differences between plastic decking and wood decking. Plastic decking never needs to be painted, weather proofed or stained. Go ahead and go out to you deck in bare feet, no splinters. No chemical treatments. The list of features goes on and on. Mold and mildew will never be a problem, nor will insects eating you deck. Resistant to UV sun rays, will not warp. The texture makes it slip resistant and spills of any kind will not stain. All you need for maintenance is soap and a garden hose.

Installation: Each manufacturer has its own recommendations, some will advise you to pre-drill and others will say that no pre-drilling is needed. If you own or can borrow standard carpentry tools, then you can build your plastic deck. Some companies use some metal fasteners for installation and other do not, while still other companies have convenient interlocking planks to make the job easier. Just follow the recommendations and instructions and you will be sitting on your new maintenance free deck in no time.

Colors: This decking comes in a very wide variety of woods types and colors. Match your home colors, or pick a complementary color. If you like the look of exotic wood, then there is a style for you. Woods such as black walnut, redwood, and vibrant, along with muted colors. You might want to try a unique color combination, the sky is the limit.

Accessories: In addition to the decking material you will need railings, stairs and uprights, whatever your plan is there will be the correct materials to match your deck. Just imagine your deck with sweeping curves or built in seating. All of this can be found to match or compliment your deck.

Cost: The up front cost is somewhat higher than traditional lumber, but consider all the time you will have to enjoy your deck and never again worry about staining, waterproofing and painting for many many years to come. Some manufactures have a 50 year warranty!

Put away all your painting supplies and call your friends and family, get the cold drinks ready and start enjoying your worry free plastic deck.
