The City of San Angelo Community Development Division held a ribbon-cutting and open house for the Citys first Zero Energy Platinum LEED home on Monday, June 22, at 10 am The home is located at 814 W. 18th St. LEED Leaders in Energy and Environmental Design is a nationally accepted set of standards for green, environmentally friendly and energy-saving buildings. Platinum LEED means it is being built to the highest possible standard. The City constructed the home using energy-friendly methods, which will result in up to 75 percent savings on the cost of utilities for the homeowner. A $50 monthly electric bill or less will be common in the new zero-energy home. Energy-friendly methods used in construction include: • Solar panels to provide reverse metering (turning the electric meter backwards to provide homeowner with a credit to the electric bill) • Grey and rainwater collection system to irrigate lawns • Special bio-friendly insulation • Water-saving xeriscape landscaping (heat and drought-resistant plants) • Energy star appliances and low-energy light bulbs The Community Development Division works to support the development of safe, sanitary and affordable housing for low to moderate-income residents.
