Car Scrappage & Recycling Process

For the owner and keeper of the vehicle the process is very simple: First the owner should contact a local car disposal company. To get the best deal it is very important to contact several companies, many will offer to dispose of your vehicle for free but there is no reason for you not to be paid for your vehicle.

Once you have decided on the best company you will be required to surrender ownership of your vehicle. The company will then provide you with payment; always demand a receipt or a certificate of intended destruction (if you have requested that the car be destroyed). Be sure that the receipt includes the date and time of removal, the vehicle chassis and registration numbers, the year and make of the car and the amount paid for it.

The car will then be transported to an Environment Agency Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) to begin the recycling procedure. An average car is mostly comprised of steel but other parts like the battery, tyres, catalytic converter, fuel, trim plastics, engine & transmission oil and brake fluids are removed. After this, the car is ready for compacting, and the above parts are recycled for lead, platinum, plastics, rubber and asphalt in addition the fuel and oils are separated to reuse in other applications.

Your crushed and compacted car which has been stripped down to bare metal is taken to a metal processing facility for further treatment. The remaining materials found in the vehicle include steel, aluminium, lead and copper, which are either shredded into pellets or re-smelted and purified. By the end of the process, only a tiny proportion of your car will end-up in a landfill.

You can be sure that your vehicle will be recycled and its components reused resulting in minimal harm to the environment. Always ask the car disposal company you choose about the processes they under take to recycle vehicles before you hand over your car.
