www.uscis.gov green card lottery also known as the American DV lottery is a United States government program that was created to give all (or most) people an equal chance to lawfully immigrate to USA. This lottery is based on an affirmative action policy that benefits inhabitants of countries that have not sent large amounts of new immigrants in the past five years. This policy was created to keep the USA population varied, and to prevent specific ethnic groups from becoming too large. It’s important to know that the eligibility country criterion refers to ones country of birth. If one currently resides in a non-eligible county, but was born in an eligible country, he is still allowed to participate in the Green Card lottery by www.uscis.gov.

There are two main criteria for the green card lottery, country eligibility and education eligibility. The country eligibility, as stated above gives priority to the countries that sent the smallest amount of immigrants to USA in the previous five years. The countries who sent the top amounts to the USA in the last 5 years, cannot participate in this lottery at all. For DV-2011 citizens of the following countries are ineligible: Brazil, Canada, China (mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland), and Vietnam. The education eligibility criteria states that each green card lottery candidate needs to have completed a full high school education or its equivalent, or two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation requiring at least two years of training or experience.
