Alternatives to Recycling

Recycling is becoming increasingly common. Not just because more of us are getting greener but increasingly recycling is becoming law in many parts of the country.

And while recycling is an important aspect of ensuring we all have a greener future, it can still be a chore.

In many areas householders are forced to separate their waste into several different recycling bins – and in some areas as many as nine! But at least one of the consequences of this is that people pay more attention to the products they buy; the packaging that holds them, and what items they throw away.

However, it can often be impossible to avoid packaging or estimate your monthly shop down to the last meal but there are alternatives to throwing things into the recycling bin.

Composting

For food waste composting is a great way of throwing stale or unwanted food into the bin. Composting will also ensure that you have a great source of plant feed for your garden. And if you are worried about mess, a composter will ensure there is none – and composters come in all shapes and sizes, some of which are quite ornamental too.

Repurposing

Repurposing is just a term used to describe finding another use for unwanted items. Many things can be repurposed and it can often be quite a challenge to think of new uses for things. Unwanted shopping bags can be repurposed for lining household bins for instance, while empty jars and bottles can be filled with a whole manner of other things rather than being thrown away. You’ll be amazed at the things you can think of when it comes to repurposing stuff too.

Log makers

Log makers are a great way of recycling unwanted paper or cardboard. Log makers compress them into tight burnable logs which can be used for open fires, stoves and even barbecues. There is a wide range of types of logmaker and for those wanting free fuel for the open fire they are a must.
