Here’s a little something different from down in Oz. I remember a lot of these types of trucks existed when recycling was first introduced, before MRFs started to really come into fashion. I know of only three councils where these trucks are still used… I shot this down in the City of Botany Bay, found right next door to the Sydney Airport (which explains the sound of the planes passing overhead). You’ll see this is another council that remains with the old fashioned manual collections, involving the usual weekly collected garbage bins and recycling crates. In Botany Bay, Veolia carries out the recycling collections and the council is responsible for the garbage and green-waste services. The truck in this video is what I believe to be one of Veolia’s original custom-designed recycle trucks, on a Mitsubishi Fighter. The truck is broken into four compartments; the top is for all plastics, cartons and metals and the bottom three compartments (from left to right) are for clear, green and brown glass. The bottles are tipped into a ‘tray’ like section that spans across the rear of the truck, which is where all the sorting takes place.
