Many people are looking for ways of being more green in their daily lives.  There are a few changes that you can make in most areas of your life to be a little better for the environment.  One of these areas is to be a little bit greener with your grocery shopping habits.

The first thing that you can get into the habit of doing is bringing your own bags to the store instead of using the paper or plastic bags available from the store.  This cuts back on waste.  Some stores actually give you a small credit for bringing your own bag since they are saving some money.

Think of your transportation to the store.  You might consider buying your groceries from a store that is closer to your home.  Don’t go too far if you don’t have to.  Could you walk to this store?  Could you maybe even take a bike?

Have bags for your produce that you buy from the store.  You could just reused the plastic bags that you got the last time at the store if need be.  These foods are better to buy for you than packaged foods which tend to have more packaging waste.

Be sure that you buy in bulk as much as possible.  This will help you save trips to the store that you don’t have to be doing.  Additionally, many times bulk items have less packaging per unit.

When you do have left over packaging from foods, be sure that you do your best to try to recycle these as best as you can.

Make food choices for practices that you believe in.  This might be a vegetarian diet or only buying organic foods.  Each of these has environmental benefits.

Buy the things that you are going to use.  Don’t make the mistake of getting too much and having to throw away food.
