People are hearing all kinds of scarey reports about toxic chemicals leaching from plastic bottles and containers into our food and beverages.  Much of it is true.  To make matters more alarming if you re-use or heat these bottles, it could increase the dangers of the plastic.  Therefore, increasing exposure to any number of chemicals and hormone mimics.

According to the “Children’s Health Environmental Coalition”,  there is some help in the way of choices.  There is a way for us to know which plastics are worse and which aren’t as bad.  Many plastics we use have a recycling symbol that can help us decide if we want to use them.  If you look on the bottom of a bottle or container there is a number inside the recycling symbol.  Those numbers tell which ones which are accepted by recyclers.  They also tell the class of plastic and therefore its chemical characteristics.  Below you will find a “Mini-Guide to Plastic Bottle Safety”.

No.1 – Pete or Pet (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
No.2 – HDPE (High Density Polyethylene)
No.3 – V (Vinyl or PVC)
No.4 – LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene)
No.5 – PP (Polypropylene
No.6 – PS (Polystyrene)
No.7 – Other (Usually Polycarbonate)

Some plastic products are still not labeled with initials or numbers.  In those cases just call the manufacturer directly.

In a nutshell, if the bottle has the number 1, 2, 4 or 5 on the bottom, it is made from a safer plastic.  If the number is 3, 6, or 7 the percentage is higher and the plastic will leave a chemical residue.  Category 3 is the worst, followed by 7 and then 6.

Best advice is to avoid plastics for food and beverages – use metal, glass or ceramic containers if at all possible.
