The food packaging industry uses many packaging products, many of which are made from plastic. Plastic storage containers can be anything from large plastic bins or drums that hold gravy, sauce or dry products such as flour or bread mix, to small containers for Chinese food takeaways and fruit salads, for example.

Once these products were simply made from plastics and foam, but now with people increasingly wanting to know that disposal of such food packaging products is not going to cause toxic waste products to pollute land or the waterways. They also want to know that the manufacture of such products is going to use the least amount of earth’s resources possible.

Food manufacturers now are looking for food packaging products that have been created using the latest technology and using natural products such as corn, sugar cane and reed in the manufacture of storage crates and other such containers. These natural products are not only easily renewable and give farmers an added market for their product, but they decompose readily once they have been used and discarded.

Using environmentally friendly products means that landfill is no longer polluted by waste products that will not break down.

However, in Australia the use of plastic bins and other such receptacles in the food industry is strictly regulated with high standards for food grade packaging enforced and guides available for the manufacture of such plastic products by the Australian Standard for Plastic Material for Food Contact Use. Such standards are necessary to ensure that non-toxic materials are used in the making of plastic products and can integrate with the food that will be ultimately stored in them.

This makes plastic a widely acceptable form of packaging for food containers. And for those who want to know that recycling occurs, such products as strong plastic crates can be used over and over again in a variety of ways. Once their life for human food storage is over, they can be recycled as containers of other goods, or the material they contain can be recycled to make new containers.
