Chronology of handling NAV1 failure in approach to Victoria International airport: 00:00 – approaching Victoria VOR YYJ level 6000′, ask myself “Are we?”, first suspicion. recheck instrument settings. 00:20 – expecting crossing over VOR station, awaiting “FROM” flag. 00:48 – ATC clarifies and reports sees us off course several miles near edge of VOR airway. 00:58 – explain planned direct to VOR then outbound on radial 266 degrees, and I report GPS indicating somewhat south. 01:05 – ATC confirms GPS is correct and instructs turn right heading 310 to intercept Victoria 270 radial. 01:36 – second suspicion think NAV1 needle not working. 01:39 – ATC changes clearance to intercept 266 radial as per FASBO STAR arrival. 01:45 – in my read-back, I report NAV1 failure, now using NAV2. 02:19 – ATC directs fly heading 320 to intercept. 02:26 – ATC advises high terrain west, expect vectors to localizer within 4 minutes of intercept. 03:06 – recycling NAV1 in case corrects problem. 03:13 – ATC clears us down to 4000′, expect base leg turn in 3 minutes. 03:34 – intercepted radial 266. 04:15 – ATC clears us heading 170, intercept localizer. 04:39 – tune, set and identify localizer on NAV2. 05:06 – discuss about availability of a localizer only approach in case glide slope inoperative. 05:38 – report we’re using NAV2 without a glide slope. 05:45 – ATC instructs left 130 intercept ILS 09, acknowleges we have no glide slope. 06:04 – report recycling NAV1 and nature of NAV1 problem, CDI
